Valentines Red Velvet Cookies – Recipe

Proud of the turn out.

Proud of the turn out.

The kids and I had a blast making Valentines cookies this evening. Here’s some pictures of the girls making cookies and after the pictures I will post the recipe.

I am so proud of the kids! They had fun learning to bake with me today. We made 3 batches of Red Velvet Cookies today. They all turned out fabulous. I hope you enjoy the recipe.

Valentines Red Velvet Cookies - Recipe
Valentine Red Velvet Cookies
Serves: 36
Cook time:
Total time:
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2½ Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1½ teaspoons cornstarch
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 7 Tablespoons butter, at room temperature
  • 6 Tablespoons butter shortening, at room temperature
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • 2 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Cream together butter, shortening and sugar in the bowl of an electric stand mixer and mix on medium speed until very fluffy, about 3 or so minutes.
  3. Add eggs, mix until combined.
  4. Then add vinegar, vanilla and food coloring. Mix until well blended.
  5. Slowly add the dry ingredients.
  6. I start with the salt, then the baking soda, then I add the cornstarch and cocoa powder. Then slowly (cup by cup) add in the flour. Mix until combined.
  7. Stir in chocolate chips. Scoop dough out by the heaping Tablespoonful, and roll into balls. Place balls on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake cookies for 8-9 minutes. Allow cookies to cool for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

I totally cheated when I made red velvet cookies with my kids. We used a cake mix so we only needed to add oil and eggs. I’d love to try this “real” version when we have more time!
