Julie Chu and The USA Hockey Foundation – Citi Every Step of the Way

This post was created in partnership with Citi®. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Julie grew up playing with the boys, now she’s playing with the girls and representing Team USA in the gold medal game.”

I wrote a post yesterday about Citi Every Step of the Way. You can read it here. I couldn’t decide who I wanted to write about because all 9 are fabulous athletes. I chose to write about Julie Chu for two main reasons. I can relate to every one of the candidates as most people can but Julie really stood out. I will say right away that I do not usually watch hockey. I know how it’s played but it’s not something I watch. So I did not choose Julie Chu because of what she plays. I picked her because what she stands for and how far she has come. And truthfully, I see myself as a child when I see her. I also had the same attitude. I played “boy” sports when I was a kid. Yes, I used to love floor hockey. I used to box and play football. I didn’t see anything as a “boy” or “girl” sport. And to this day I do not see anything as a “girl” sport or “boy” sport. And I teach my children the same thing.

Julie as a young hockey player. :)

Now on to telling you about Citi and U.S. Olympian Julie Chu teaming up with The USA Hockey Foundation’s Try Hockey for Free Days to help fund free equipment so that kids across the country can experience the excitement of playing hockey for the first time. I think this is awesome. Not only does it give kids a chance to try something new but it also gets them exercise. And it keeps them busy so they stay out of trouble. I think this is a great thing to support so I chose to award some of the $500,000. Head over to http://citi.us/1ek5E7S  and click to give Julie your pick. Make sure you watch the video’s below to learn more about Julie and about Citi Every Step of the Way.

Free hockey equipment would be great. It’s one of the reasons I won’t let my kids play hockey – because of the cost.

great post, I do not think sports should be geared to only one gender. I encourage my children to chose what they like. Hockey is awesome! My husband played all the way thru elementary through college.

I do not think there should be gender issues with sports. Everyone should be able to enjoy and participate.

Wow… I would love it if all sports could do something like this… we want our kids off the couch and into sports, but it is $100 to sign up then $100 or more for equipment, it is so expensive…

I’m not much of a sports fan. But I love the Olympics. I enjoyed learning about Julie Chu.

I love to see corporate sponsorships of sports and athletes. It is so important for kids to be involved in something active, no matter what sport it is.

I love your choice and the fact that you liked playing hockey! I chose Ted LIgety because I believe in urban kids getting the chance to ski and snowboard. I’m really glad I ran across your blog today!

I think it’s wonderful that they are providing free hockey equipment. It’s so sad when kids can’t play sports because they can’t afford it. Sports are benficial in so many ways!

I love the generosity Citi is demonstrating. My husband used to play hockey and said it is VERY expensive so free hockey equipment would be great!

I don’t think sports should be separated by gender either. My husband I joke all the time that our youngest girl is going to end up being our star football player. LOL
